Food & drug interactions
What to avoid, what to be careful with, and what helps.
Alcohol
Raises the risk of lactic acidosis — rare but serious — and can cause low sugar. Avoid, or keep strictly minimal.
Taking it on an empty stomach
Causes nausea, stomach upset and loose motions. Always take it with a meal.
Scans with contrast dye (CT, angiography)
Tell your doctor you take metformin — it may need to be paused for a short time around the scan.
Vitamin B12 (long-term use)
Metformin can lower B12 over the years. Your doctor may check your B12 level once a year.
Very high-fat meals
Slow down how the tablet is absorbed. Prefer lighter, balanced meals.
High-fibre foods
Oats, dal, vegetables and whole grains slow sugar absorption and work well with metformin.
